Two years ago, the Library initiated a license to ReferenceUSA, a widely adopted directory database from Infogroup that provides information on 14 million U.S. businesses and some 210 million U.S. residents with the capability of zeroing in on specific locations of business entities, e.g., all of the Walgreens stores in metropolitan St. Louis. Previously, the Library had subscribed to the popular, Midwestern-limited, SorkinsOnline database but decided to move to ReferenceUSA to allow for broader, nation-wide searching of companies. The database was also seen as an ideal career-development resource with its specifics on companies, key officers, and location-specific data.
With the severely worsened budget scenario presented at the beginning of this fiscal year, however, it was regrettably seen as necessary to cancel our license with ReferenceUSA. When this fact became known to Patrick McKeehan, Director of the SIUE Small Business Development Center (SBDC), a conversation started between Business Librarian Paul Anthony and Mr. McKeehan on how we might preserve this resource. An agreement was quickly reached in which the SBDC would cover 80% of the cost of a year’s renewal, with the Library handling the remainder from a non-state Business-fund account. So this important database is secure for the time-being thanks to Patrick and the SBDC.
