Porter's Five Forces

Michael Porter's Five Forces Model of analizing Competition in any Industry, and originally developed in a 1979 Harvard Business Review piece and in the author's 1980 book, Competitive Strategy:  Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors (Free Press, 1980)  (SIUE Book Collection. HD 41 .P67 1980), and nicely summarized in The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management. Volume II, pp. 108-111 (Blackwell Business, 1997; Ref. HD 30.15 .B463 1997 v. 2) consists of the five basic forces:

  • rivalry among existing firms
  • threat of new entrants
  • threat of substitute products or services
  • bargaining power of buyers
  • bargaining power of suppliers
