Overview of APA Style

APA Style is one of a number of sets of rules for writing used in the academic world, particularly in the areas of the health sciences, social sciences, psychology, education, and business.  The guidelines of the APA Style are developed and revised by the American Psychological Association (APA) in its Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association of which the seventh edition was published in 2020.

Many students make the mistake of using APA Style only for their reference list.  APA Style covers all parts of writing and publishing--organization (title page, page numbering, margins, spacing, headings, etc.), punctuation, tables, in-text citations, the reference list, etc. It even includes consideration of ethics in writing and bias in language.  APA Style is written primarily for publication of journal articles and does not always apply for papers written by undergraduate students.  If a faculty member requires APA style, it is best to determine the details of how they want the style to be applied.
