This guide provides references to selected print and online materials about the history of film.

Locating Newspapers in Electronic Format

Use the following newspaper databases to locate history of film or reviews.

Historical New York Times

Contains full images of articles in the New York Times from 1851-2008.

Step 1: Enter the film title in the text box

Step 2: Under "Document Type" select "Review."

                      OR

at(movie review-favorable) AND "Blair Witch Project"

Finds favorable, unfavorable, etc. opinions of movie reviews of the movie Blair Witch

Lexis Nexis Academic (coverage varies: 1980– )

Contains the full text of articles published in selected newspapers.

Step 1: Enter the film title in the text box.

Step 2: Under "Result Groups" select "Subject" from drop-down menu (allow search to run).

Step 3: Under "All Results" select "Movie Reviews."

Newspaper Source

Contains selected articles from 180+ U.S. and international papers.

Step 1:  Enter the film title in the text box

Step 2: Under "Document Type" select "Entertainment Review."

Newsstand

Contains coverage of 1300+ major U.S. and international newspapers, news websites and blogs including more than 300 in full text.  

Step 1:  Enter the film title in the text box.

Step 2:  Under Document Type select more review options, then select "Film Review"
