Management 441: Public Companies

This guide will provide links and search strategies to key resources that will help in locating Company and Industry information.

Major Tip

Read the 10-K Reports The 10-K. Give special attention to:  items 1 Business (Strengths/Opportunities), 1A Risk Factors (Weaknesses/Threats) and 7 Management's Discussion and Analysis of Operational Conditions and Financial Performance (Operations and Financial Statement Explanation).

These will provide an in-depth description of strategy as well as operational and financial performance from the fiscal year end compared to previous year. Also, check out recent 10-Q's or quarterly filings.

Read item 2 for a snapshot of where the company is at the moment operationally and financially. Finally, review the 8-K's for recent material events that effect the company's execution of strategy, operations and financial/stock performance.

Database Search Tips

  1. In the databases, whenever possible, Limit by: Peer-Reviewed, Scholarly Journals, or Date.
  2. In Standard and Poor's NetAdvantage
    1. Search using the company's name or ticker symbol to retrieve a company profile.
    2. Then, use the links on the left side of your screen to explore related information, such as equity research (stock reports), investment research, financials, news, etc.
  3. In Mergent Onlin
      • Tip 1: : Use the [Government Filings] page to search for SEC filings
      • Tip: 2: The [Company Details] page consists of ten sub-pages, detailing various aspects of the company. Information includes a business summary, company history, list of properties owned by the company, subsidiaries (including percentage owned and geographic location), business segments (the business and geographic revenue analyses for major segments of the company’s business operations), financials, long-term debt, capital stock and earnings estimates.
      • Tip 3:  Use the [Investext] page to access investment research reports written by analysts at leading investment banks, brokerage houses, and consulting firms.
      • Tip 4:: The [Report Builder] page allows you to create custom reports, including company-industry comparison reports.
  4.  Use the Database Links in the next section of this page to search for company information.  Remember to search by Company AND  the specific information desired.   For example:  Boeing and financial reports. 

Some Additional Recommendation When Searching:

  1. Include strategic planning, strategic management, risk factors,  or other terms in your search strategy to narrow if you get too many results from your search.
  2. If no results are found, it is likely other search terms are needed.  Don't give up?
